— Psychotherapy
What to expect in therapy
Our job together is to explore the reasons behind your symptoms (your worries, your sadness or depression, your anxiety, your difficulties in relationships, romantic and otherwise, etc.).
As part of this exploration, we will do the following:
Clinical Assessment
We will assess you and determine if you suffer from a clinical condition, Dr. Stevenson will communicate your diagnosis to you, if one is found.
Psycho-education:
We will psychologically educate you regarding your condition and symptoms, and we will teach you strategies to manage your symptoms.
Ww will teach you communication and relational skills, including live (in session) role modelling and behavioural modification.
Exploration:
We will encourage you to explore your thoughts-feelings-thoughts and, to that end:
- We will ask you questions that challenge your thinking
- We will make interpretations
- We will relate things you have shared with me at different times and that now seem to reveal a pattern
- We will indicate homework in order to engage you more in the exploration process
- We will make challenging suggestions and hypothesis
- We will be open to your feedback
In particular, we will listen to you if you are unhappy with the way things are going between us and will try my best to understand you, explain things to you, and adapt my behaviour.
Strategies and Interventions:
Psychological interventions can be divided in two groups: symptomatic relief and personality modification.
The first group has to do with teaching you ways of coping with your symptoms (your anxiety, isolation, depression, avoidance; teaching you communication strategies; etc.). An example of intervention in this group is CBT, DBT, and other behavioural types of interventions.
The second group is considered more “in-depth” as it attempts to modify the way you are affected by your past, the way you relate to others, the automatic repetition of behavioural and relational patterns and, in essence, the causes behind your symptoms. Together, we need to discuss what it is that you are looking for. In this group, we find psychodynamic interventions; attachment-grounded therapies such as EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy); EMDR.
Summary:
Our job is to help you understand how it is that you cope with stressors, relationships in general and romantic relationships, in particular; how you see yourself and how that may be different from the ways others see you; how you may be seeing things in a way that goes counter your intended goals and your best intentions and interests… To that end, we will at times call you attention to your own comments and expressions in a way that may sound to you as confrontational and you may even experience as though we are critical of you, disapproving of your behaviour and even frustrated with you.
Psychological intervention is a collaborative endeavour and, therefore, it is important that you let us know how you are feeling, what your thoughts are even if that may come across as a dissenting opinion to you. It is also important that you persevere through feelings of discomforts so that the two of us may explore whether there is any merit to the items we bring up to your attention.
